About Me

My name is Eboni Allen, and I am a self-proclaimed writer. Written word was my first best friend. In hindsight that sounds cute, and maybe even a little pretentious, but I can assure you that, at the time, it was neither. In all transparency, I’ve never quite felt like I truly understood people, or like they really understood me for that matter. Books get me though, and I them! As long as I’ve been able to read, I’ve had my head in a book. No exaggeration, all of my free time growing up was spent reading or writing.

At this point, I’ve written a bit of everything, from poetry to short stories, full length novels, and, most recently, a few scripts.

I discovered poetry at 10 years old, when I was selected to perform Nikki Giovanni’s poem “Ego Trippin” at a school play. With the encouragement of my dad, I wrote my first book of poetry the following year, and my first short story 4 years later. I have since written countless poems and short stories, and performed at poetry lounges across the country.

I am originally hail from Compton, CA, and attended UCLA for college. I moved to Houston 5 years ago to pursue a Phd in Sociology where I study race, gender, and class inequality. In 2018 I launched the Woke-ish podcast with one of my best friends and colleagues, where we discuss current events, pop culture, and issues related to inequality. Podcasting really helped with my confidence and willingness to share my thoughts out loud, particularly with strangers. Although my passion for creative writing has in some ways taken a backseat to my educational pursuits over the years, I am so happy to have found my way back to it. To a certain extent I have also managed to use my research to combine my love for writing and school. I am currently writing my first non-fiction book based on my dissertation research exploring Marriage Culture Among Black Professional Millennials. I will also be publishing my first fiction novel at the top of 2020.

I have always been very opinionated, but have been too introverted to share my opinions with the public for most of my life. This blog is an attempt to push myself out of my comfort zone.

Thank you for being here!
