The Black Millennial Take on COVID-19: Why is the joke always on us?
Now that the hysteria around COVID-19 has somewhat subsided, we can now look back over the past 3 months with a bit of hindsight. By now we are all incredibly over-aware of COVID-19 and it’s reach. Yet, no more than 2 months ago, a large segment of the population thought that their specific sub-group was immune to the virus. There were a number of reasons why some groups believed that they were not at risk of contracting COVID-19. Perhaps because COVID-19 originated in Wuhan, Asia, some groups speculated that the viral infection was inherent and confined to members of the Asian diasporic community. Here, I refer to Asian as a…
““You Can Have It All, Just Not at the Same Time”: Why Doctoral Students are Actively Choosing Singlehood”
Background: This research was conducted as part of my Master’s Thesis in 2016. However, I developed the framework for this project while working on my undergraduate honor’s thesis as a McNair Research Scholar at UCLA. Although the samples are quite different, the same passion went into conducting this study. My honor’s thesis had a race focus, and centered the experiences of mothers of color in Phd programs. Unfortunately, Phd programs in Texas are far less diverse than those in California and I struggled to find enough women doctoral students of color to meet sample requirements. Thus, this study is composed of a somewhat racially diverse sample of men and women…

Are Humans Still Social Creatures?
I’m sure you’ve heard the age-old adage, “humans are social creatures.” As a human and sociologist, I can say with near certainty, that that is true indeed. Even now, in a generation plagued with social anxiety (more on this later), we are finding new ways to define and redefine what it means to be “social.” It’s changing everyday. For example, does going Live on Instagram weekly, or even daily, qualify as being social? Regardless of your individual answer, I can guarantee you that there is someone out there with a different one, which means that the definition of what it means to be social is no longer universal. There was…
